If you’re at all like me you love the indulgence of an afternoon at the spa but struggle to find the time to make it happen. If you’re a lot like me you don’t love spending the money either so you find ways to pamper yourself at home. For me, that used to mean a visit to the drug store for beauty treatments I could do on my own at home. But, I grew tired of spending money on prepackaged treatments filled with unpronounceable ingredients that mess with the environment, and were likely shipped here from halfway across the world. So, I started looking into how I could achieve the same benefits by using ingredients already in my cupboard. And hoo boy, did the internet ever help a girl out.
These days I have an arsenal of DIY recipes on hand for nearly everything: body butters and lip balm, face masks and sugar scrubs, mineral powders and deodorant, and a lot more. And this year — as I prepare to greet warmer weather — I find I’m really into face and hair masks. Super easy to make, the masks help get my face and hair back to beautiful after months of suffering winter’s dry air. So if you’d like to give DIY spa care a try check out a few of my favourite spring — or any time — masks below, and give ’em a go!
Honey Avocado Face Mask (for dry skin)
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon avocado
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/2 a mango, mashed
Mix ingredients together. Leave on for 15 minutes and then remove with a warm cloth.
Papaya Greek Yogurt Mask (for dull skin)
2 tablespoons mashed, ripe papaya
1 tablespoon full-fat plain Greek yogurt
Mix ingredients and gently apply mixture to a clean face, neck, and chest. Let sit for up to 10 minutes, taking into account skin sensitivity. Remove with warm water. Finish with toner and moisturizer.
Coconut & Honey Repairing Hair Mask
Great for restoring moisture, softness, and shine back to your hair.
1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil
1 Tablespoon Honey
Mix ingredients in a bowl. Transfer to a small saucepan heat until melted. Let cool and apply to hair. Let mixture sit for 15–20 mins — a shower cap will come in handy. Rinse. Dry and style as usual.
Brown Sugar Hair Mask
Relieves a dry, itchy scalp
2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
1 Tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Mix sugar and oil in a bowl. Apply to hair from top to bottom and let sit for 15–20 minutes. Rinse.
